Turkey Stearnes talked to his bats, commending the ones that came through for him and threatening the ones that didn’t deliver with the ax.

And as for Cool Papa Bell? Well, he could fly down the base paths.

“Once Papa hit a line drive right past my ear,” Paige once said. “I turned around and saw the ball hit his ass sliding into second.”
